Our Why
We created The BAB to interrupt the pervasiveness of the Black pain news cycle.
The Black and Brilliant aggregates 300+ sources of news and content from 4 continents, 18 countries, and 71 cities — especially throughout the African diaspora — to bring The Black and Brilliant directly to you.
Curated and founded by Dennis Maurice Dumpson, The BAB was created as he was finalizing his book The Black Pain Economy, where he exposes a $2 trillion economy directly informed by Black people — of which $260 billion he traces directly to Black pain.
He posits that few are incentivized to actively work toward liberation and freedom, because so many profit from Black pain — from conservative media outlets to Black radical liberation rhetoric. Few are exempt from participating in The Black Pain Economy.
Because of this, Dennis created The BAB as a repository and reminder of the brilliant Black lives, culture, and stories happening right now around us. Weaving the good news about Black folk from Africa, the Caribbean, Brazil, and throughout the United States — from Philadelphia to Oakland and all points in between — to give you one place to find Black joy.
This is important because constant interaction with trauma, suffering, and pain negatively impacts the nervous system and the mind. At its heart, The BAB is intentionally curating a space to remind us that Black life is worth celebrating and Black joy can give peace to the spirit.
